History

This old black horse I’m riding – if you’ll notice what’s his brand, He wears the Crooked R, you see, none better in the land

– A Bushman’s Song (1892 Banjo Paterson) – describing the horses of Richard Rouse of Guntawang

Guntawang was formerly owned by Sir Hugh Denison  who owned  and stood at Guntawang Stud the amazing Poseidon who won in 1906/07 the VRC Derby and AJC Derby, the VRC St Leger and AJC St Leger, the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup – a record unequalled.

In later years John Foyster achieved great success at

Guntawang Stud with STC Golden Slipper winner John’s Hope plus Planet Kingdom, King Apollo and Crown Jester. Now owned by Charlie Cropper, Guntawang  breeds a handful of mares each season and we are proud to have bred  and sold De Lightning Ridge , who broke Zephyr Bay’s  35 year old track record at Randwick when winning the 2010  Group 2 AJC  Challenge Stakes .
