Jamaican a Warrior for Nanny Maroon

Nanny Maroon was born in West Africa into the Ashanti tribe, and became a famous Jamaican leader of the eighteenth century, who led her people in the fight against slavery.

The equine Nanny Maroon was a much loved Hunter Valley racemare – trained at Muswellbrook by Paul Englebrecht she won three stakes races in Sydney in barnstorming fashion and brought the house down at Scone when she raced away with the 2001 Dark Jewel Classic.

Nanny Maroon passed away in the Hunter Valley in 2012 at age 16, but produced many good foals at Guntawang, highlighted by 2010 Randwick 1000 metre record holder and Gr 2 Challenge Stakes winner De Lightning Ridge.

And so it was her 2007 foal by Lonhro , the gentle giant Jamaican Warrior that emphasised her legacy as a broodmare when winning a Showcase 1400 m at Cranbourne on 4th July, following an earlier win at Moonee Valley over 1200 m. The rising 6 yo has been carefully managed by trainers Michael , Wayne and John Hawkes  who feel that at 17  hands he may have finally finished growing!

The winner of 4 from only 10 starts , Jamaican Warrior races for Guntawang owner Charlie Cropper and brother Rob , and his gentle demeanour ensures his status as favourite stable horse of  next generation “co trainer” 6 year old Lachlan Hawkes.
